Sanctimonious Bastards !

It never ceases to amaze me when I either hear, see or read where an individual who’s been caught doing something so egregious that they know to be wrong ! Now comes word that the NCAA having completed their investigations into numerous recruiting violations at the following schools . The schools in question are U Conn and University of Tennessee (Vols) and their respective basketball and football programs. In the case of Tennessee the violations involve the basketball and football programs under Bruce Pearl and the school’s former football coach Lane Kiffin who’s now the coach USC (USC Trojans) .

Pearl recently served an 8 game suspension mandated by the NCAA . In the aftermath of the suspension as I alluded to earlier it has now come to the fore that not only did Pearl knowingly violate the rules but he also had some of his subordinates to lie on his behalf and also have players on the team falsely deny any wrongdoing on his part.

Pearl In Serious , Serious Trouble At Tennessee

The NCAA letter of allegations to Tennessee yesterday brought very few surprises:

* UT’s baseball program was not accused of any violations.

* Instead of handing UT a “failure to monitor” charge regarding football, the NCAA mailed one to Lane Kiffin instead.

* Bruce Pearl and Tony Jones were listed for a violation of the so-called “bump rule” for running into a recruit at Virginia’s Oak Hill Academy just four days after UT announced the program’s self-imposed penalties last September.

If anything, the surprises were mainly positive. But re-reading the letter, it’s clear that the violation of the “bump rule” — usually a secondary violation — is a bigger deal than initially thought. Why? The NCAA listed that as one of the seven major violations Tennessee stands accused of.

The letter states that Pearl and Jones spoke with a recruit for “two to three minutes” at Oak Hill. That’s a bit more than a bump. Being that Pearl and UT officials had just finished coming clean and promising “never again,” NCAA officials are clearly of the opinion Pearl and his aide should have run screaming in the other direction when they accidentally (?) bumped into recruit Jordan Adams. And the NCAA is right.

Everything else in the report was already known — Pearl misled NCAA investigators, he called a recruit’s father in the apparent hopes of getting him to aide in a cover-up of Pearl’s barbecue, the coach was hit with an unethical conduct charge. Bad, bad and bad.

In the case of Lane Kiffin the violations centered around the recruiting of players and his having inappropriate contact with a number of them prior to those players becoming eligible. Kiffin had always maintained his innocence with regard to his recruitment of players at the school even though his tenure was no more than a year. And inasmuch as he was viewed within the collegiate ranks as a former NFL — coach and an assistant under Pete Carroll while he was at USC . In reality though Kiffin was never that good an NFL coach and his only claim to fame may well have been the fact that was there while Carroll had a litany of future NFL quarterbacks under his tutelage.

Kiffin’s tenure at Tennessee wasn’t without controversy as he sought to chide and chastise football coaches with the SEC as well as berate their teams. I’ve always said that if you’re prepared to talk smack you’d better have the cojones to back it all up and quite clearly Kiffin has been all talk with little to back it up. And shouldn’t escape anyone’s notice that an argument can be made that it was the same this past season with the USC Trojans even with NCAA mandated sanctions on the school’s athletics’ program . And for the idiot Trojans’ fans out there who continue “bitch and whine” that there was no wrongdoing on the school’s part…… simply shut the hell and grow a damn pair ! Kiffin and the fans can complain all they want but the fact of the matter is you commit the crime then prepared to face the consequences and do the time.

In the case of U Conn there facts were there to suggest not only did Jim Calhoun as the basketball coach knowingly violated the rules so egregiously but then chose to hide behind the veil of secrecy. And it certainly hasn’t helped that even in light of the sanctions the school now wishes to appeal the sanctions because of the irreparable damage and financial cost it would mean for the school’s athletics’ program. Which begs the question when all of this malfeasance was going on and Calhoun was running amok with his assistant coaches in tow who was actually watching the coaches ? And clearly in the case of each of these three coaches the athletics directors in question were either complicit in this all or they actually knew nothing .

NCAA suspends Calhoun for 3 league games

Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun was suspended by the NCAA for three games next season for recruiting violations committed under his watch, though the program dodged a major sanction when it was spared a postseason ban.

Calhoun was cited by the NCAA on Tuesday for failing to create an atmosphere of compliance within his program and was suspended for the first three Big East games during the 2011-12 season.

The NCAA also hit U-Conn. with scholarship reductions for three academic years, recruiting restrictions, permanent disassociation of a booster and three years probation.

I am not one to think that these three schools are the only programs where there’s said to be some form of cheating going on because it’s my believe that across the entire collegiate landscape there’s a great deal that is happening that the NCAA at times chooses to ignore or the mere fact that they haven’t the resources to carry out full and succinct audit of the schools . And it also begs the question what the hell are the compliance officers , coaches and athletic directors doing on the campuses of their respective school programs ?

NCAA President Mark Emmert having immersed himself in many of the issues that collegiate athletics ruling body has to deal with has been less than frank as to how he views many of these problems. The in-house Infractions Committee has merely gauged the direction of the wind and merely followed its course in order to create the perception that they’re doing the right thing when it comes to imposing sanctions on a program. It’s apparent for all to see that when you have coaches in sports such as football and basketball said to be compensated millions of dollars each year along with commercial endorsements that can easily garner them hundreds of thousands of dollars if not an additional $1-$2 million annually , it’s real cause for concern that beyond wanting to almost anything to guarantee success _____ winning is predicated upon the actions and lengths that even an athlete is prepared to go to even when they know it’s wrong and the fact that a coach is also inducing them into any wrongdoing.

Auburn coach Gene Chizik , Nick Saban and Kiffin have questioned the fact that unscrupulous agents have unwarranted associations with many college athletes while in school and in some cases it’s been known for them to actually turn up at high schools gauging the performances of many of these athletes. It certainly shouldn’t have surprised anyone that former NFL great Deion Sanders had been in contact with the Dallas Cowboys’ —- Dez Byrant while he was still in college and it almost made the player ineligible at one point of his college career. Sanders who apart from being an on air NFL Network analyst also has his own promotion and marketing company as well as being a sports agent. You can simply draw your own conclusions from the fact Sanders claims there’d been no wrongdoing on his part with regard to his close association with the Dallas Cowboys’ wide receiver.

When the likes of Chizik and Saban and Kiffin are questioning agents being in contact with their player or athletes in general it begs the question what are they themselves doing to stop such actions ? They can question the agents’ actions but when they’re being so richly rewarded but yet they’re unwilling to question whether or not athletes ought to compensated on a per- diem basis via their respective schools. Instead these coaches would rather remain silent and and unwilling to give a succinct and persuasive answer on the matter. At the root of his all however are the several billion dollars that comes into the coffers of the NCAA each year. We’re told that vast majority of this money goes into the athletics programs and to aid the student athlete. Am I mistaken here but that’s like saying the revenues that the government is in receipt of through the corporate and income tax paid to the IRS then finds its way into well meaning social programs and the infrastructure. Last I looked, the economy was bleak , there was a $1,300,000,000,000 ($1.3 trillion ) budget deficit , unemployment 9.6 % and the national debt (approx $14.3 trillion) had actually outstripped the nation’s GDP of $14,000,000,000,000 . But yet somehow with all of the money we’re told that we’re told finds its way into these programs we still the egregious actions of these coaches ,associated staff and players alike. Never-mind the fact that the boosters have their role to play in all of this and . somehow I think that there questions need to be asked as to the power they have which by perception alone seems to be a great deal more than any athletic director or college President.

In reality the actions seen here isn’t unlike the idiocy portrayed by the Congress , US Senate and that of the present Obama — US Cabinet ! If the US government can have us believe that they have everything under control then should we also believe what we’re being told by the NCAA , collegiate coaches and athletic directors across the college landscape ? I think not !

All in all these latest findings concerning Bruce Pearl and Jim Calhoun shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anyone in spite of the alleged integrity that men are said to have. But in reality integrity shouldn’t as such be a word associated with either because if they actually had any they’d readily admit that they have lied as to their actions concerning the issues raised and they have continued to hide behind that veil of secrecy hoping that over time things would essentially disappear. In reality this will scenario will certainly happen again with another coach and athletic program and therein lies the real problem the NCAA simply doesn’t act with any great authority nor do they in fact care to act with responsibility.
