As many of you know, I’m a professed boxing fan. But over the past few years I feel that as a fan of the sport , and I think I can speak for all of us boxing fans . The sport has made its most earnest fans disenfranchised. So much so, that many of us have now find the fast and rising genre of MMA as a more compelling and appealing way to watch a combative sport that resonates with us all. And in UFC , as the governing body for the sport here, domestically. They have gone out of their way to make sure that the best fights are being staged and broadcast in earnest. Be it on PPV or via a cable outlet , most notably Spike TV.
Well this Saturday , the 26th September , in perhaps the most anticipated fight of his career , Chris Arreola (27-0, 24 KO’s) takes on and challenges Vitali Klitschko(37-2-0, 36 KO’s) for his WBC heavyweight title at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. And with the state of the heavyweight scene being what it is at present , where the Klitschko brothers, Vitali and Wladimir, seemingly rule the roost alongside several East European fighters. It’s been the long held view that until there’s some semblance of decency within the heavyweight division. It will continue to be viewed as a three ringed circus act, being manipulated by certain promoters and the various international governing bodies. And with there being no prominent American heavyweight boxer who resonates with the fans , domestically or on the international stage. The heavyweight scene as we know it, will prove to be nothing more than a freak show for any disinterested party who cares to witness the mess therein.

For once, boxing’s heavyweight division has gotten it right. The best championship fight that could be made is actually the one that has been made.
Vitali Klitschko will defend his World Boxing Council belt at the Staples Center in Los Angeles against Cristobal Arreola in a fight that could turn out to be the finest heavyweight championship match since Klitschko and Lennox Lewis put on a classic in 2003.
That’s not to say, however, that Klitschko-Arreola, however appealing it may be, is the best heavyweight fight out there. That fight, however, simply can not be made.
That would be a match of the division’s two most talented men: Klitschko and his younger brother, Wladimir, the owner of the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Organization belts.

Arreola for his part, brings with him an unblemished record and a great deal of potential. But his overall experience pales in comparison when measured against the champion, Vitali Klitschko. However, he’s viewed as a champion in the making and quite possibly the most serious challenger that Klitschko has had to face currently. The potential is there for a great fight and quite possibly a newly crowned heavyweight champion of the world. God knows, we need the division to have some excitement once again and some real legitimacy added to it ! The division is now treated with such irreverence that in all honesty more excitement is liable to be created, were we to witness a celebrity boxing match up between Jose Canseco and Richard Simmons . Any takers for that one ? Come on now , there’s got to be someone who at least loves either Jose or Richard ?
Of the two Klitschko brothers , it has been Vitali, who’s thought to be the better of the two. And certainly over the course of his career, he’s had the more meaningful fights when measured against that of his brother’s resume’. Though it has been Wladimir who has remained the more active of the two. And that’s understandable , given the fact that Vitali had been away from the ring for almost two years , after suffering what was thought to a career threatening knee injury. Rather than opting for surgery , he chose to seek solace away from the ring , while rehabilitating and recuperating from his injury. However, upon his return to the ring in 2008, he successfully fought and defeated Samuel Peter and Juan Carlos Gomez. The decision over Samuel Peter , made him a claimant for the WBC title, at the time.
Both fighters here are adept and both have considerable punching power. Each being knockout specialists in their own right. Arreola if anything , might well be viewed as the more explosive of the two fighters in that particular category. With 24 of his victories coming by way of knockouts. If nothing else it might suggest to us , that either the quality of opponent faced wasn’t that good to begin with. Or in-fact Arreola is extremely dangerous as first suggested by those who have observed him in the ring professionally. And though in large part, Vitali Klitschko is the odds on favorite to win the fight outright. There’s nothing to suggest that it will be as easy as many prognosticators are making it out to be. The champion could very well be in for the fight of his life ,when he faces off against his young challenger.
Arreola is looking to become the first fighter of Mexican American heritage crowned heavyweight champion of the world. We’ve often thought of gifted Latin fighters as primarily gaining fame and notoriety in the lighter weight divisions. Well, Chris Arreola looks to put that myth to rest by making that now a reality , rather than a wish. And should he achieve that distinction ,then it could very go a long way of bringing back a great deal of interest within the heavyweight division. The division lacks a champion that the fans can easily respond to. And the aficianados of the sport are merely kidding themselves in suggesting that the Klitschko brothers are the best thing that the division has to offer by way of talent and competitiveness. It smacks of complete idiocy on their part ! And it is if anything an insult to the fans of the sport. Especially when one considers that the Klitschko brothers refuse to fight each other, in order to give some semblance of credibility to the division in seeking an undisputed heavyweight champion.
Unfortunately for the sport that once reigned supreme, wherein the heavyweight title was once the most recognized , prestigious, and individual of sports prizes in the world. In the minds of many now, it’s merely seen as nothing more than moniker for someone claiming to be something that they are not. Being the heavyweight champion of the world ought to mean being the undisputed champion and not the holder of a version of the title. It has been almost a decade since there was an undisputed champion within the division. And since the reign of that champion, Lennox Lewis – ended with his retirement . All that we’ve seen , has been the fragmentation of the division. Whereby, each of the international governing bodies of the sport has resulted with each having its very own champion. Clearly the sport and in particular the heavyweight division is awry with its disparities.
Lennox Lewis goes on to defeat Mike Tyson with an 8th round TKO in their meeting for Lewis’ defense of his undisputed crown. The venue for the bout was The Pyramid in Memphis , Tennessee. Date of the event 8th June, 2002.
With those disparities comes a lack of credibility , legitimacy but above all respect for the heavyweight division. It’s champions are now so lightly regarded that it becomes laughable when one talks about there being a heavyweight champion of the world. This has now become the farce of the sport and of the division as a whole. And the fans of the sport aren’t inclined to take an interest unless there is a fighter out there that they can respond to. It may well appear that Chris Arreola could very well be that fighter , should he dethrone Vitali Klitschko. Do you think that the challenger will be able to defeat the champion ? Your comments on this matter ought to make for a great topic of discussion.
